HOW WE WORK

The Rehabilitation Model was developed by Julie after two years of self-analysis of her own recovery process. Granted, having the advantage of being exposed to varying elements of social development through to global strategy formation and roll-out, assisted largely in the ability of developing a holistic model that could be used in any community across the world, taking into account local conditions, law, statistics etc. The Model allows for those victims that have consciously made a choice to exit the situation to be able to exercise and effect that choice by addressing a combination of factors where they may need assistance.

The Model covers five areas that are potentially required to be addressed by the victim to overcome abuse in regaining a more stable life and frame of mind, ultimately becoming a survivor. Within each of these five areas, various projects and partnerships are undertaken.

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM

As one of the best-known global campaigns to end gender-based violence, the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign is an annual international campaign to communicate the message that gender-based violence is a violation of fundamental human rights. Between the 1993 UN World Conference on Human Rights (Vienna) and the 2001 World Conference on Racism (Durban) 16 Days contributed to the recognition of women’s rights as human rights and capitalized on the gains and opportunities of UN-centered strategising by civil society.

Initiated in 1991 by participants of Rutgers University Center for Women’s Global Leadership’s Global Leadership Institute in Rutgers, New Jersey, USA, the 16 Days Campaign has become an international annual event that rallies activists, government leaders, students, academia and the private sector in many countries around the world to demand an end to gender-based violence.

The decision to create an annual campaign lasting 16 days was based in the need to emphasize violence against women as a human rights issue by symbolically linking it to two important annual dates: 25th November, International Day Against Violence Against Women, and 10th December,
International Human Rights Day, with the 16 days between them devoted to 16 days of action to call for elimination of all forms of gender-based violence wherever it occurs.
